The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus appear to be getting a new yellow color option soon, alongside the current blue, purple, midnight (black), starlight (cream) and red – Apple is hoping this could boost sales of these two cheaper models iPhone 14.
This comes from a source on a Chinese social network Weibo (opens in a new tab) By Mac Otakara (opens in a new tab) AND MacRumors (opens in a new tab). While the first tipster doesn’t have much track record, MacRumors does – and says Apple is planning a product briefing next week.
While we can’t be sure of any rumors or leaks until it’s actually confirmed, Apple has a form for adding new iPhone colors for this time of year: green for the iPhone 13 last year and purple for the iPhone 12 a year earlier.
Everything was yellow
As in the past, the goal is to boost sales of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. We’re now about halfway to the launch of the next iPhone – the iPhone 15 – so it’s the right time to try to increase interest in current phones.
This is especially true for the iPhone 14 Plus. Although it was introduced to replace the iPhone 13 mini, which has hardly disappeared from store shelves, it is said on Apple Street that few people are buying the iPhone 14 Plus.
This is perhaps unsurprising given that both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus can outperform last year’s Apple A15 Bionic chipset. Even Apple itself seems to prefer the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Analysis: more colors please
It may be a little surprising how much the new colors can affect the attractiveness of the device – after all, every internal element remains the same. The yellow iPhone 14 will still run just as fast and take the same quality photos and videos.
Or maybe it’s not surprising at all: the aesthetics of a gadget are important, and at least for some people, the appearance of the phone is the main consideration when considering upgrade options. This yellow tint will definitely make your iPhone look a bit more distinct.
We’re not entirely convinced by the idea of yellow as a smartphone color. It’s not something you see often and immediately brings to mind various bodily fluids. On the plus side, there are associations with the sun and … uh … Lego minifigures? Or The Simpsons?
We’re sure Apple’s design team can be trusted to create a yellow shade that’s pleasing to the eye. More color options are always good for consumers, and we should hear about the new iPhone 14 in the coming days.
