Turns out Ramattra isn’t content with being the best tank in Overwatch 2. With an impressive kit of skills, it looks like he’ll replace Doomfist entirely.
Lots of exciting information has been announced Overwatch 2 while Overwatch 2 x Korea Conference (opens in a new tab). Commercial Director John Spector revealed that “we expect the next hero to be a support hero”, but he also revealed Ramatraimpressive abilities.
These abilities include the long-awaited Nemesis Form, which allows Ramattra to turn into a whirlwind of punches reminiscent of the Tasmanian Devil. Not unlike some other fist-centric tank hero.
Imitator
“I compared the form of Nemesis to Doomfist,” said Spector, “Ramattra is a hero who strikes multiple times.” I can see it already; Doomfist charges up his rocket punch when I’m trapped in a small room with no way to escape. It’s like shooting a fish in a barrel as he unleashes a fully charged punch right into my chest, leaving me dazed and unable to move; I’m easy prey after this. Be sure to imagine this terrifying scene as you watch Ramattra’s shockwave blast annihilate both shields and enemies.
There is another similarity in the defense of Ramattra and Doomfist. In Nemesis form, right-clicking will temporarily slow down Ramattra, but greatly increase his defense. This mirrors Doomfist’s ability to block power, which can also block damage while slowing the champion. However, Doomfist can charge up his Rocket Punch by blocking damage.
Basically, Ramattra has two of Doomfist’s four abilities, and the other two aren’t particularly special; I wouldn’t copy them either. Ramattra’s features are simply better, thanks to its dual forms.
Doomfist has one job; he’s made for rushing into combat, dealing damage, making room, and then quickly exiting. While it can be great for creating an opening in the opposing team’s defense, the dive tank is notoriously poor at protecting its team. While Ramattra can play a dive tank in his Nemesis form and then change into an omnic form that follows the rules of the main tank. Basically, this means that Ramattra can cover himself and his teammates, so he doesn’t have to back down from fights.
discontinued
It wasn’t easy for Doomfist players, first going into tank mode, and now with the introduction of Ramattra things have gotten worse. Players have had to learn how to play Doomfist once, and while some have mastered what it takes to play Doomfist as a tank, there are still uncertainties about his abilities and how to make him useful to the team. With the advent of Ramattra, Doomfist either needs to find a new role on the team, or he just won’t be selected for Overwatch 2 teams at all.
Despite Spector’s insistence that “the two heroes [Doomfist] and Ramatra can be distinguished”, this may not look like it to players who have to choose between tanks. When Ramattra kicks off December 6 thanks to Doomfist’s abilities, players may not need much persuasion to choose an omnic over a frontline fighter.
